Ukrainian Internment Remembrance Day

About the event. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens Ukrainian Catholic Church in observance of National Ukrainian Internment Remembrance Day.

Internment refers to the forced detention or imprisonment of people, typically during times of war or political instability, without trial. This often involves groups considered potentially dangerous to national security or public order, such as foreigners, ethnic or political minorities.

During World War I (1914–1918), approximately 8,500 Ukrainians in Canada were interned because they were immigrants from Austria-Hungary. Since Canada was at war with Austria-Hungary at the time, 4,000 Ukrainians who held citizenship of the empire were forcibly relocated to camps, and their property was confiscated. Most were later pardoned, although many were required to report regularly to the police.

During World War II (1939–1945), there were also cases of internment, though on a smaller scale. However, many Ukrainians who were immigrants from Germany or other countries faced persecution and internment once again.

Life in the camps was harsh, and internees endured significant hardship without legal protection. After the war, many were released, but their reputations remained under suspicion, and they often faced discrimination. It wasn’t until the 1980s that these events began to be officially recognized, and in 2005, the Canadian Parliament acknowledged the internment of Ukrainians and issued an apology.

The first part of the session is theoretical and takes place in a cozy setting over a cup of coffee. After the theory, the group moves on to practice and goes shopping to pick out new items. The stylist helps avoid impulsive purchases, ensuring that the chosen pieces will not just take up space in the closet but will bring joy and be worn regularly.
