As winter begins, Ukrainians in Calgary are invited to enjoy a Christmas market, creative workshops, an improvisation concert by Skaizhena Koniaka, a performance of The Snow Queen, a holiday express train, and the annual Christmas Carols Festival.
Christmas Market

About the event. A festive market will take place at St. Vladimir’s Cathedral. Visitors can enjoy family-friendly entertainment and festive performances while savoring traditional Ukrainian dishes. The menu includes a variety of stuffed dumplings (varenyky), sausages, cabbage rolls (holubtsi), borscht, and holiday bread (kalach). About the event. This December, Valeriia Dubovyk, founder of Art Calgary, will host a series of four creative workshops where participants can craft handmade holiday gifts for their loved ones.

Improvisation Concert by Skaizhena Koniaka

About the event. This unique concert will take place at UCAN Radio. The band Skaizhena Koniaka, featuring talented pianist Ivan Kharlamov and vocalist Dmytro Hospodinov, gained popularity this fall with their radio segment Yak po Notakh. The duo improvises melodies and lyrics based on classic Ukrainian poetry, blending literature and music into a remarkable live experience.
This event also has a charitable purpose: proceeds will go toward purchasing winter sleeping bags for Ukrainian defenders. The goal is to raise $2,283 CAD.

About the event. The Ukrainian Strum Theatre in Calgary presents The Snow Queen, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale.
This production tells the story of two teenagers and their journey of friendship, courage, and overcoming fear of the Snow Queen’s dark magic. The play will captivate both children and adults, offering themes and messages for all audiences.
This is the second Canadian production by Kharkiv-based director Snizhana Hukasian-Korobeinykova. The theatre previously performed the play Muse earlier this fall.

GULBA CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

About the event. The organizers of Calgary’s renowned Ukrainian parties are hosting a large-scale Christmas celebration. The event features a Christmas and vintage market, Ukrainian food and beverages, and a festive photo zone with a professional photographer (both indoors and outdoors).
The evening will begin with live music by a guest saxophonist, followed by Ukrainian hits and popular tunes. Guests will also enjoy performances by JT Band, a professional drummer, and DJ Santa.
In addition to music and dancing, the event will include:
A gingerbread house-making workshop
A Beer Pong Championship
A table football tournament
A charity auction to support Ukraine

Holiday Express

About the event. The Christmas Train will pass through Calgary, making a stop near the Anderson C-train station. The train, decorated with holiday lights, serves as a stage for musical groups performing outdoor concerts. For 45 minutes, attendees can enjoy music, take photos, and soak in the festive atmosphere.
Visitors from last year’s event recommend arriving early to secure the best viewing spots.

Annual Ukrainian Christmas Carols Festival

About the event. The 27th Annual Ukrainian Christmas Carols Festival will be held at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church. Adult and children’s groups will perform traditional festive songs.
